About the Battle of Ideas

Despite considerable progress, many people in developing countries are still facing major challenges. Over one billion men, women and children have to survive on less than 1 euro a day. One in eight people go to bed hungry every night. About 85% of the world lives in the driest half of the planet. More than 1.5 billion people live in places that are affected by conflict and violence.

Fighting these problems requires creative ideas and innovative solutions from all parts of society. To generate these new ideas and innovations, we invite you to join this competition!

Join the Battle and win!

The Battle of Ideas is a competition for teams of Dutch and foreign bachelor and master students who study in the Netherlands. The competition focuses on creating ideas to tackle global problems in a new and innovative way. The three teams with the best ideas will be invited to WOTRO’s conference Forward Thinking. There, they will enter a one-day sandpit: a co-creation session with representatives from science, policy and practice. At the end of the day, the teams will be judged by experts, including the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen. The winning team will receive an award of 1500 euro per team member.

To compete, participants need to take the following steps:

Step 1 Register for the competition and join the matchmaking group on Facebook to meet other students to team up with.
Step 2 Create a multidisciplinary and international team of 2-5 students (min. 2nd year bachelor students and master students from universities and universities of applied science)
Step 3 Pick your theme (Food, Water, Security and Rule of Law, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Inclusive development)
Step 4 Develop a creative and new idea. Describe it in 1200 words.
Step 5 Submit your proposal before 29 August and get selected for the finals
Step 6 Work on your proposal with experts at WOTRO’s Forward Thinking Conference on 15 October 2014
Step 7 Compete with others and win 1500 euro for each team member!
